Accessibility
Our commitment to accessible science lessons
Osmia Learning is built for real classrooms, and real classrooms include students and teachers with a wide range of abilities. We want our website and interactive lessons to be usable by everyone, including people who navigate with a keyboard, use a screen reader or other assistive technology, or need larger text and stronger color contrast.
The standard we aim for
We work toward conformance with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Level AA — the standard commonly used to meet accessibility expectations, including the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Accessibility is an ongoing effort rather than a one-time task, and we continue to test and improve.
What we have done
- Text and interface colors are chosen to meet WCAG AA contrast levels.
- Every page has a “Skip to main content” link, clear heading structure, and landmark regions so assistive technology can navigate quickly.
- All interactive lessons can be completed with a keyboard alone — activities that were once drag-and-drop now also work by selecting an item and choosing where it goes.
- Important changes, feedback, and errors are announced to screen readers.
- The site respects the “reduce motion” setting for people who are sensitive to animation, and it scales cleanly when text is enlarged.
- Images include text alternatives, and form fields have clear labels.
Using the lessons with assistive technology
The interactive lessons are designed to work with a keyboard (Tab to move between controls, Enter or Space to activate them) and with screen readers such as VoiceOver, NVDA, or JAWS. If a lesson visual is decorative or is described in the surrounding text, screen readers will move past it; interactive steps are provided as clearly labeled buttons.
Known limitations
Some content is still being reviewed and improved, including the text descriptions for certain detailed science diagrams and any downloadable resources. If you come across something that is hard to use, we would genuinely like to hear about it so we can fix it.
Tell us about a problem
If you experience any difficulty using Osmia Learning, or need a lesson or resource in a different format, please email [email protected]. It helps if you can include the page or lesson, what you were trying to do, and the device, browser, or assistive technology you were using. We read every message and will work with you to provide the information or activity in a way that works for you.
